The Colnago ACR Ultegra 11 Carbon Road Bike is new to 2014 and personifies everything Colnago has learned from building the best bikes on the planet for the last 60 years. Brand new for 2014 is the Colnago AC-R. Born from the now famous M10 monocoque frame, the AC-R brings legendary Colnago performance to the masses. Whether a victory in the Spring Classics or winning atop L’Alpe D’Huez in the Tour de France, the M10 has proven to be a winning design. The AC-R brings this same penchant for winning in an affordable package, with similar efficiency for the steepest climbs and comfort for the roughest roads. The AC-R brings Colnago’s nearly 30 years of carbon expertise to the AC-R with a ride quality that is uniquely Colnago. The same tuned geometry and quality manufacturing that bring Colnago riders across the finish lines of professional races worldwide can be found in the AC-R. Through smart design and world-class engineering, riders will no longer have to compromise ride quality and safety concerns on less-expensive carbon bikes.
The Endurance series combines the technology of Marin’s latest road racing bikes with specific frame and component features that minimize rider fatigue. The available T3 Carbon or A6 alloy Endurance frameset is the foundation of the formula with a geometry that offers greater stability and positions the rider with a slightly more upright position. Formed and arced seatstays provide vertical compliance while high profile chainstays deliver efficient energy transfer for climbing and hard pedaling efforts. Select component choices add in preserving rider energy like larger, 24c and 25c tires and size-specific handlebars that tailor fit riders of varying height. The combined effect delivers a bike with the perfect balance of performance and ride quality.
Lighter, stiffer and more durable than its predecessor, there is a lot to like about the R1B carbon-fibre outsole to maintain high levels of stiffness, vital for efficient power transfer. Two Boa dials help lock your feet in and do a very good job of it. Microadjustment is possible and it’s easy to get them off quickly thanks to a quickrelease function. At a claimed 227g for a size 42.5, they are relatively lightweight compared to similarly priced rivals. A neutral footbed also means that these should suit most, if not all, foot shapes. One thing to keep an eye out for is sizing. The size 42s we had on test were a little on the large side, so it would be a good idea to try before you buy to get the perfect fit that such a big spend deserves.
