If you spend a few minutes browsing through our copy, then you probably know that we’re not exactly purists when it comes to cycling kit. Sure, we occasionally privilege traditional designs and styles over the latest trends in tube shapes and colorways, but we’re open-minded about adopting new technologies when they suit our purposes – especially when a manufacturer applies the latest fancy technology to the basics of cycling. More than almost any other bike we stock, the Aernario Basic Shimano Ultegra Complete Road Bike is one of the best blends of tradition, innovation, and solid build kit that we’ve rolled through our shop doors. For the frameset, Storck used Computer Flow Dynamics to tease aerodynamic tube shapes out of a geometry that balances the low-weight aggression of compact frames with a nod to the more cantankerous, classic-geometry purists among us. Though it’s subtle, the wind-dodging design is inherited from Storck’s time trial frames, so it’s both invisible to the eye and the wind. And since the module’s overall shape and design borrows heavily from the Fascenario 0. 7, the aerodynamic benefits don’t come with the usual tradeoff of poor handling and unforgiving road feel. When viewing the frame from the side, it looks like a traditional road frame. However, if you were to take a cross section, its aero shape would become strikingly evident. These shapes are laid-up with Storck’s own CFR/UD unidirectional carbon fiber. This curated material is the main reason why Storck has so many BOTY awards from the German cycling industry, as the unidirection orientation of the fibers mean that the sheets can be situated for targeted load-bearing properties. This lets Storck stiffen the frame without sacrificing damping qualities and – paradoxically – while using less material for a lower overall weight. The Aernario features a massive, oversized PressFit BB86 bottom bracket juncture in order to boost power transfer even further, and the seatstays connect.
The Fenix C20 Complete Road Bike is built to be the ultimate middle man in your cycling operation. It’s not as aerodynamic as the top-end Noah, but it weighs 170 grams less. It’s also not as light as the feathery Helium, but it’s a much smoother ride. In short, the Fenix C20 is the middle ground of Ridley’s line of bikes in all categories but one: comfort. Its unparalleled ride quality turns harsh roads to butter without sacrificing a watt of power. To keep you in the saddle all day, the Fenix C20 uses a vibration devouring blend of 30- and 24-ton unidirectional carbon fibers as opposed to the 50- to 60-ton moduli favored in only-weight-is-important frames. Potholes, cobblestones, and other road hazards are as smooth as crosswalk paint on the Fenix, but they may feel like taking repeated hammer blows to the kidneys on 60-ton carbon. The C20’s oversized bottom bracket and burly chainstays mean comfort doesn’t come at the cost of efficiency, though. If you ever get tired of wantonly running over obstacles, the stiff, tapered head tube nets responsive steering to dodge through debris with ease. The C20’s kit is a respectable affair all around, and it continues the theme of putting ride quality above flair. The Shimano 105 drivetrain and crankset deserve some special attention. Completely re-imagined for 2015, the new 105 boasts 11-speeds and a four-arm crankset. Evidently, it’s been dipping into the trickle-down basket and is enjoying some Ultegra technology. You’ll certainly enjoy the responsive shifting and incredible power transfer through the crankset, which is further highlighted by the Fulcrum Racing 7 LG wheelset. The Fenix’s frame means you won’t feel the road, but this mix of components means the road is certainly going to feel you.

Storck’s Visioner C Road Bike Frameset is the entry ticket to the carbon fiber world of company founder Markus Storck. This ticket affords you access to one of the Old World’s few remaining secrets: the unrivaled design philosophy that informs every frameset bearing the Storck name. Key to this philosophy is the idea that every cyclist, regardless of material, model, and size, enjoys the same stiffness-to-weight ratio. So the Visioner C shares numbers with the superlative Aernario, but with a little more weight. The secret to this ratio lies in the proportional tubing of the unidirectional carbon fiber layup, which puts a premium on front end and bottom bracket stiffness by varying the wall thickness in the top and down tubes depending on the frame size. This focus carries through on the seat tube and chainstays, whose girth minimizes lost watts due to flex in the rear triangle. The frame’s geometry features the same 73. 5-degree head and seat tube angles that are found in most sizes of the Aernario, which combine with the Stilleto fork for confident tracking on descents and punchy power on rolling hills or during sprints. Power doesn’t come at the cost of comfort, though, as the thick chainstays are paired with thin, cushy seatstays, so watts go into the road but the road doesn’t travel up the seatpost to your body. The Visioner is built for internal routing that accommodates mechanical and electronic drivetrains, so the frame’s clean lines aren’t interrupted with cables, housing, and the like. It also means that wiring to an electronic system’s battery and front derailleur is tidy and easy to route, and the battery itself has a dedicated position on the frame.
