Good things come to those that wait. And if you’ve been putting off making the leap to carbon fiber as well as 11-speed drivetrains then your virtuous patience can be rewarded with the Nashbar Carbon 105 road bike. At its heart is a sweet monocoque carbon frame that rivals those of much more expensive brand name peers in stiffness, lightness, and ride quality. At the cockpit end is a tapered headtube and full carbon fork that inspires confidence courtesy of its rock solid and utterly predictable handling. The drivetrain is anchored at a massive BB86 bottom bracket that ensures not one iota of your strength will go to waste. With so much more surface area up for grabs to attach the down tube, seat tube and chainstays deflection from all those watts you’re producing is just not a worry. The shifter/brake levers, front derailleur, rear derailleur, and cassette all fly the 105 11-speed flag and if these parts were logo-free you’d be hard pressed to distinguish their performance from its much higher-priced Shimano siblings. The FSA Gossamer compact crankset fits perfectly into the components mix. Its cold forged aluminum crank arms are racing stiff, and the precision CNC-machined 7075 chainrings are angled and pinned for flawless shifting. Lighter, stiffer and more durable than its predecessor, there is a lot to like about the R1B carbon-fibre outsole to maintain high levels of stiffness, vital for efficient power transfer. Two Boa dials help lock your feet in and do a very good job of it. Microadjustment is possible and it’s easy to get them off quickly thanks to a quickrelease function. At a claimed 227g for a size 42.5, they are relatively lightweight compared to similarly priced rivals. A neutral footbed also means that these should suit most, if not all, foot shapes. One thing to keep an eye out for is sizing. The size 42s we had on test were a little on the large side, so it would be a good idea to try before you buy to get the perfect fit that such a big spend deserves.
